Food waste
One of the most important things you can do for the environment is to take advantage of food and throw away less. Leftovers can be turned into biogas and biofertilizer.
Almost 40 percent of what ends up in the garbage bag is food waste. If the potato peels and food scraps are instead sorted out, they can be converted into biogas and biofertilizer and contribute better to the cycle.
The biogas is used as fuel for buses, trucks and cars. Biogas is a renewable fuel that reduces the use of greenhouse gas emissions.
Tips for sorting food waste
- Use the holder included in the starter kit for the food waste bag. It is designed to keep the bag dry. Dry food waste smells less and the bag does not break.
- Fold down the edge of the food waste bag and the opening will be more stable.
- Allow the food waste to drain and feel free to use a sink scraper to get it out of the sink.
- Dry peel potatoes and root vegetables directly in the food waste bag so the bag doesn't get so wet.
- Put used paper towels in the food waste bag and it will absorb some of the moisture in the bag and reduce odors and make the bag drier.
- If you have seafood leftovers, you can put them in double bags if you want to reduce the smell.
- You can also put them in a clean food waste bag and freeze it until collection day. This can be good during the warm time of the year.
