Without your own car

If you travel by car, you can do a lot to reduce your impact on the climate and the environment, while also reducing your costs.

If you can manage without your own car, you can reduce your travel costs and free up more time in everyday life.

Mix your travel

You can advantageously mix up your travel by, for example:

  • Carpool
  • Carsharing
  • Renting a car
  • Carpooling
  • Taxi
  • Public transport
  • Walking and cycling

Advantages of not having your own car

The cost of owning your own car is determined by several things and can be difficult to calculate. This can include costs for:

  • Parking
  • How old the car is
  • Congestion tax
  • Loan on the car
  • Fuel costs
  • Costs for service, repair and inspection

You can also save time that would have been taken with tire changes, service and inspection and you don't have to arrange a parking space for your car.

Carpooling and car sharing

Using shared cars in a car pool means that you only have a car when you need it.

  • Car pool cars are often new, electric and well insured.
  • Most car pool cars have fixed locations where you can both pick up and drop off the car, others you can pick up and drop off at different locations.
  • Many car pools have several different car models, which makes it possible to choose a car according to your needs.
  • Several car pool companies also offer cargo bikes and electric scooters.
  • There are also digital platforms where you can rent private cars or rent out your own.

Rent a car

Car rental can be the most advantageous option for those who need the car for a week or longer. There are often offers for weekends, holidays and public holidays, for example.

Micromobility and loaner bikes

Micromobility is suitable for those who have errands of a few kilometers up to a mile or are spontaneous in their choice of means of transport.

  • In Stockholm, there are electric scooters in different parts of the city.
You can pick up an electric scooter in one parking space and end your trip in another parking space.
  • In certain zones and in certain places, it is prohibited to ride an electric scooter for traffic safety reasons.

Public transportation

Public transport with SL is suitable for commuting, running errands and excursions to places with good connections by metro and commuter train, bus or boat.

  • A monthly pass on SL costs 1060 SEK (650 SEK for young people, students and pensioners) and is valid throughout Stockholm County.
  • A single ticket costs 43 and 26 SEK respectively.
  • If you have at least 12 return travel days per month, or make 24 single trips, you will benefit from having a monthly pass.

Use car with others

Carpooling saves money, time and fuel costs. There are several ways to facilitate carpooling.

  • For carpooling to regular activities with selected participants, you can create a text or chat group or a shared online calendar.
  • There are services and platforms for offering and requesting carpooling in broader forums, for example between cities or for commuting.
  • One example is Skjutsgruppen, which has a Facebook page for those who want to offer or request carpooling.

Taxi

Taxis are suitable for shorter distances in one direction, or when you are unable to drive yourself. You can make a number of taxi trips per month before you reach the cost of owning your own car.

Visit Stockholm has a list of some of the taxi services available in Stockholm.
