Vacation
Choose to travel by train or bus if you are going to travel long distances. Opting out of flying is an effective way to reduce your carbon footprint.
Think closely when you are going on a trip. Your effect on the climate varies a lot depending on how you choose to travel.
Travel sustainably by train
Stockholm has train connections to large parts of Sweden. With long-distance trains, you travel long distances in a climate-smart and energy-efficient way. For example, a flight between Stockholm and Gothenburg has approximately 20,000 times greater climate impact than the corresponding train journey.
- Vacation at home and discover Sweden by train instead of travelling abroad. Make a list, where have you never been?
- Look in train holiday groups on social media channels for ideas, inspiration and to share the experiences of others both within and outside Sweden.
- If you want to travel by train abroad on holiday, there are traveller-friendly high-speed trains in, for example, Spain, France and Italy.
- Take advantage of cheaper prices: Tickets are usually the cheapest when they are released, approximately 90 days before departure.
- Take the night train: This way you make use of the time when you are sleeping and wake up rested at your destination.
Climate Calculate Your Trip
Are you unsure about how different it actually is to travel in different ways? At Klimatsmart semester you can climate calculate your trip and compare the climate impact between train, car and flight.

Take the bus
Many trips to and from Stockholm can be made by bus. Since many people travel together, the energy consumption per person is less than, for example, a car trip.
- Take the bus on holiday and contribute to a better environment. All trips made in the SL traffic (Greater Stockholm Local Transport) by bus, for example, are approved by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation's Good Environmental Choice eco-label.
- Ask the bus companies for a climate-smart bus trip.
- Sit back and use the time to rest instead of sitting behind the wheel.
- Support local companies and producers by going on a bus excursion and discovering a new place.
- Contribute to electrification: Today, 95 percent of public transport by bus runs on renewable fuels or electricity.
- If you want to go on holiday abroad: Look for bus companies that offer travel options from Sweden and further out into Europe and experience the landscape in a sustainable way.
Fly less
Aviation represent a large part of Stockholmers climate footprint. If you choose to fly, there are some things you can do to decrease your climate impact.
- Stay longer at your destination when flying.
- Avoid frequent weekend trips by plane.
- Choose an aviation company who uses biofuel and who employs carbon offsets.
- Choose an environmentally friendly way to get to the airport. With Arlanda Express you can go by train to Arlanda, and Flygbussen (the Airport coaches) run on fossil free fuel.
