Handling hazardous waste
Hazardous waste must be handled properly, as it can create major risks for people, animals and the environment if it ends up in the wrong place.
Hazardous waste includes anything that is toxic, corrosive, environmentally hazardous, infectious, flammable or may be harmful to your health.

- Anything that is powered by a cord or battery is considered hazardous waste and should therefore never be put in the trash.
- Paint, nail polish and cans of dried paint, including water-soluble paint.
- Chemicals and other things that may be toxic to humans or the environment.
- Some cosmetics are considered hazardous waste.
- Certain types of oils are toxic to the environment and must be collected as hazardous waste.
- If the product is explosive, flammable, corrosive, infectious or toxic to humans or the environment.
Tips for reducing and sorting hazardous waste
- Buy products that are environmentally labeled.
- Look for products that carry symbols that mark hazardous substances. These can include different types of electronics, paints, spray cans, batteries and solvents.
- Do not mix different types of hazardous waste when it is time to throw them away.
- If the product is not empty, it is especially important to make sure that it is well sealed and does not leak before it is sorted, and preferably left in the original packaging.
- Some stores have started to accept hazardous waste, but you can always sort it at recycling centers and environmental stations.
